Goals for 2018

A new year and new set of goals/target to set. A new year is a good time to dwell on goals to set — not just financial but also personal and professional goals. To make steady progress on a regular basis requires determination, patience and of course a target in mind. Setting and writing down goals and working towards them are one of the best ways to make progress. As far as financial goals go, the long term goal still remains the same — achieve financial independence that will provide us with more freedom to do what we want out of life. Following are the goals that I am setting for 2018.

Annual Update – 2017 Review

Welcome to the annual 2017 update. This is part of  a series where I track our financial progress on a regular basis. I present three parts in this series: (i) Investment & Portfolio Update, (ii) Passive Income Update, and (iii) Goals Update.

1. Investment & Portfolio Update

2017 was quite an interesting year. The broad equity markets performed very well with S&P 500 returning ~19%. Regular readers of this blog may be aware that I have been following a multipronged approach to investing lately — with a focus on diversification and following multiple strategies for different portfolios. I focus on active stock investing in both dividend growth companies and growth-focused companies, while my wife’s and daughter’s portfolios use index funds.

The companies from our portfolios increasing their dividends and details of portfolio changes are summarized below.

Passive Income Update – Dec 2017

Welcome to our monthly passive income update for December 2017. This is part of the scorecard series where we track our dividends and other sources of passive income. We also include changes and updates related to our investments during the month – showing the overall progress.

Passive Income  Update

Passive income for the month of December 2017 was CAD$1,515.41, a new all time high thanks to an annual payout from one of the funds 🙂 The passive income for the month comprised of US$406.83 and CAD$1,002.80 (exchange rate is US$1 = CAD$1.26).

Passive income change is +110.4% QoQ and +6.01% YoY for the month. The passive income for 2017 adds up to $9,697.25 and achieves ~97% of our annual goal of earning $10K. Even though I came up ~$300 short on the goal, I still consider this a pretty good achievement for the year.

Outlook for 2018

Happy New Year! 2017 is in the books and its been a great year for investors all over. The US equity markets are flying high as all major indices continue to ring in all-time highs month after month; the multi-decade bond peak seems to be in, as interest rates are now on the upswing — not just in US, but in other countries as well. The commodities markets are starting their bull run as inflation is starting to rear its head after years of potential deflation, disinflation, and stagflation. New tech like blockchains and the cryptocurrency mania is capturing the imagination of the masses and making plenty of investors obscenely rich in a short period of time. But at the same time, every single sector/market has some dark clouds on horizon too — as investors get carried away and assume that risk has been mitigated which may not necessarily be the case.

Top Investment Picks for 2018

As the new year rolls out, its time to share the annual investment pick contest that I run. This is the 3rd year in the running. This is merely meant to be a fun experiment to run and collect top investment picks for 2018 from a community of investors I regularly interact with. There are still some great picks from the 2016 & 2017 top picks, and I invite you to check them for ideas. Remember that investing is a long game — so, focusing on short intervals like a year is not prudent — even though this contest focuses on one year return. Plenty of older picks may still present long term value.

The rules were simple: Pick one investment (stock, bond, fund, commodity, cryptocurrency or any other form of investment security), and present a short & quick investment reason behind the pick. I will track this progress over the year and provide quarterly updates on this blog.

Top Investment Picks for 2018

Before I present the picks, I would like to remind the readers that these are simply picks based on current outlook and each investor should not take this as investment advice. If you decide to pursue these investments, please do your due diligence before investing in any of the securities mentioned.

Without further ado, here are the top picks from the investing community for 2018.
