Quarterly Update – Q4 2014

Welcome to my quarterly update for Q4 2014. This is part of  a series where I track my progress on a quarterly basis. I present three parts in this series: (i) Investment Update, (ii) Passive Income Update and (iii) Blog Update.

1. Investment Update

I initiated/added to the following positions during Q4 2014.

I closed my positions in the following holdings.

2. Passive Income Update

Passive income for the quarter was $1,803.90. That number has skyrocketed past my wildest expectations as I have been able to generate more passive income in the “other” category, coupled with an annual payout from my wife’s mutual fund in December.

 Q2

2014 $1,322.47 $951.18  $1,055.79  $1803.90

Suffice it to say, that I am ecstatic with the result of achieving an over $1800 per quarter and surpassing my goal with a total passive income in 2014 of $5,133.

Quarterly Update - Q4 2014

“Other” Passive Income

Most of the my passive income comes from my investments in dividend paying companies, but part of the growth in passive income also came thanks to what I call other sources of passive income, which includes cash back rewards credit card, advertising revenue from this blog, interest on cash and writing premium articles for Seeking Alpha. As you can see from the chart below, my other category has performed well. For Q4 2014, my other passive income totaled $934.35 (up from $501.06 from last quarter), and has been my best quarter so far. I look forward to investing proceeds of these sources into stocks and funds to compound my growth.

All Other Passive Income - Dec 2014
I realize that some of my sources of passive income are not completely passive, as it requires me to put some time and effort into it. However, I consider these sources to be semi-passive and I wrote an article to capture my thoughts on the scale of passivity of each income type. Be sure to check out Passivity of Income.

3. Blog Update

Pageviews
The three months in the quarter saw the following figures:

  1. Oct 2014: Total pageviews = 11,869. Unique visitors = 3,413
  2. Nov 2014: Total pageviews = 10,345. Unique visitors = 3,098
  3. Dec 2014: Total pageviews = 11,747. Unique visitors = 3,943

I set myself a goal at the end of last quarter of reaching 20,000 pageviews per month consistently, which I have failed at. Increasing  the number of pageviews remains elusive, but I dont intend to quit. I will keep working away and hope to increase my pageview until I meet my goal. My short term goal remains reaching 20K pageviews per month consistently.

  1. Pretty spectacular quarter R2R. Annualized you’re talking about over $7,000 of income which is tremendous. Pretty clear you’ve set yourself up to have a hell of a 2015 for passive income, even with the focus of clearing some debt.

    • w2r,
Some of the passive income is variable, so I dont think I will hit $7K..but its nice to know that a goal like that is achieveable. Thanks for stopping by and the comment.

      cheers

  2. R2R,
Stick with the pageviews goal–you’ll get there very soon. I’m now a subscriber.

I like the method in which you present your monthly data, but why not distinguish your blogging as a “side hustle” or something like that?

    Thanks for the post.

    Eric

    • Welcome, Eric. I guess you could call it a side hustle, but for me its more a hobby simply paying me some dividends. Besides I mix a bunch of different things in the Other category, which cant really be called side hustle.

I will be sure to check out your blog.

  3. Looks like you have had a pretty spectacular quarter. The pageview numbers look good but we both know pageview numbers can always be improved. 🙂

    • Tawcan,
Yup…the pageviews have been frustrating for me as I dont see any growth there. For now, I simply hope to keep cranking out the articles and hope the pageviews will improve.

      Have a great weekend

What a great quarter you had! It feels amazing when you beat your goals, especially financial ones, doesn’t it?! Congratulations, and I look forward to hearing a great report at the end of Q1, 2015!

    Cheers

    • It sure does, M. Noting like being able to crush your goals. I remember at the end of 2013, I was unsure if I would be able to get even close to $4K, but decided to set the goal anyway. And here I am having smashed it. Thanks for the wishes…i hope Q1 turns out to be just as great.

    • Thanks AFFJ. Appreciate the support. I am still not happy with the blog traffic…hopefully that’ll pick up in the new year. I will try to post some interesting content to attract more readers.

      Best wishes

  5. RM2R,

Great quarter end update! Nice job crushing your goals. I wonder what your Q4 will look like this year? $2,500? Thoughts?

You’ll get to 20,000 I am sure, confident in your blog and the readers you attract – consistency and persistence is key, I can’t wait until you show us you hit this mark!

    Talk soon!

    • Thanks Lanny. HAhaha…I dont know what my Q4 for 2015 will look like. Hopefully I will get north of $2000 🙂
