Moving to WordPress

Hey there!
I have decided to move my blog over from Blogger to WordPress. After thinking about it for a while and weighing in the pros and cons, I have finally come to a decision to move my blog over to WordPress.
For those unfamiliar, WordPress is a blogging software and is the most popular one out there. It is not uncommon to start blogging on Blogger for novices and once the traffic and following grows, majority of the users move to WordPress as it provides better control.
The advantages far outweigh the pain of moving the blog, including the following:
  • I will own my own content – as the current agreement by posting on Blogger is that Blogger owns the content. This was a big deal for me as I am creating value with my words and dont want it belonging to someone else.
  • Even though Google has made no indication of shutting down the service, we have seen many a great Google products shut down just because. Google does not provide any explanation when shutting down services except that it was not meeting their goals…and that is unacceptable for me and you – the readers who rely on the service.
  • WordPress provides better control on lots of aspects of blogging that are unavailable on Blogger. There are also way better options for design and themes that I am looking forward to incorporate on the blog.
Followers of the blog shouldnt see any issues – my old links/handles will still remain the same. I intend to make this transition over this long weekend. Please let me know if see major issues during the time.
See you on the other side!

  1. I love the WordPress interface better myself. I used to use Blogger when they first came out years ago. WordPress just gives more flexibility when it comes to customization.

  2. R2R,

Congrats on the move! I hope it went well. It was difficult for me, so I hope it went a lot smoother for you. 🙂

Enjoy the new platform. WP is definitely pretty cool.

    Best wishes!

I was wondering whether to start my blog on blogger or WordPress and went with blogger only because I’d used it in the past. I kind of wish I’d gone with WordPress now mostly for the reasons you stated here.

Best of luck with the transition!

Now that Im moving everything over, Im realizing that its easier than I thought. If its the amount of work that is stopping you, dont fret it. It takes time, but its easy work.

Still lots to do…and Ive already spent half a day on this.

Thanks for stopping by and the wishes.
      cheers

      Hey JC,
Didnt know you were doing another blog. Whats it called? The move has been fairly easy, although a bit tedious and time consuming. I am done porting most of the stuff over. I can write a post detailing the move if theres interest.

      • It’s nothing special I just wanted a way to update family/friends that want to keep up with the details of our son. It’s much easier than making 20-30 phone calls every time there’s an update.

I’ve been debating about making the move and whether it’s something I can realistically complete over a few day span by myself. I’m not that tech savvy so I’d been thinking about maybe paying someone to do it like All About Interest did. Guess I’ll see how your process was but it looks like it went fairly smoothly.

Cool. I think you can do it yourself, but I guess it really depends if you want to put that time in. Let me know if I can help in any way.

          regards

      Hey ArizonaTrader,
There are plenty of plugins you can use to transfer your posts over. Im thinking that about writing a post about it since it might help people like yourself. There are still a few things that have to be done manually – and is tedious.
The sooner you move, the better if you want to move your stuff. I resisted moving to WordPress for a long time as I thought that Blogger was taking care of a lot of things that I didnt have time to deal with – but eventually there were too many things that I was not able to keep track of – and I couldnt use automated tools that are present out there as WP plugins, but not avail for blogger.

      cheers

Yes, everything went smoothly. There were a couple of hiccups which needed some time consuming work, but so far looks ok. I just made a post this morning so that people can use as reference when moving from blogger to wordpress.

Thanks for stopping by. Would like feedback on the new site if you notice something.
